Nikita’s husband Major Vibhuti’s heroic death came less than a year after her marriage. The tragedy happened in April when he was about to return home for his wedding anniversary. But instead of weeping over the loss, Nikita decided to follow in the footsteps of her husband, who sacrificed his life for the country. Nikita left her job at a private company and joined the Officers’ Training Academy in Chennai. Lieutenant Nikita Kaul completed 11 months of military training with 30 women cadets. Nikita was posted to the South Western Command.

Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhaundiyal was one of the four soldiers killed in a clash with terrorists in Pulwama on February 20, 2019. Apart from him, Sipoi Hari Singh, Havaldar Shioram, and Sipoi Ajay Kumar also died. One week before that, the Pulwama attack had claimed the lives of 40 CRF personnel. Attempts to apprehend the mastermind of the attack led to the heroic deaths of those including Major Vibhuti.
